Welcome to the STEAM Corner!
The STEAM Corner is a place to discuss and curate ideas related to science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics activities for children and teens. This week’s topic is cloud dough.
The process of making cloud dough is relatively simple and combines elements of science and art for youth participants. In making cloud dough, youth will be able to observe the chemical reactions between cornstarch and lotion and theorize on how they combine to make a doughy texture. This activity can often become messy and is not advised to be conducted over carpeted surfaces.
To make cloud dough, you will need the following:
- 1 Cup of Cornstarch
- ½ Cup of Lotion
- Food Coloring (optional)
- Mixing Utensils
- Bowls or Cups
- Ziploc Bag

Youth may begin by combining their cornstarch and lotion into a bowl or cup, mixing gently as to not spill the ingredients. After some time, a doughy consistency should begin to form. For liquidy mixtures, add cornstarch as necessary. For dry and flaxy mixtures, add small drops of lotion as needed.
After the doughy ball forms, youth may be able to begin holding the mixture in their hands. For youth who want to add food coloring to their cloud dough, one or two drops can be mixed in by slowly kneading the dough with your hands. Participants are encouraged to discuss what they are seeing and feeling with their cloud dough.
When finished, the cloud dough can be placed in an air-tight container or Ziploc bag.
